Warwickshire beat Lancashire 78 on the first day of the Bob Willis Trophy final at Lord’s before overtaking their opponents without losing a wicket to go 120-0, a 42-point lead; Craig Miles got 5-28, rookie Manraj Johal took 3-29 and Rob Yates scored 69no for the Bears

Craig Miles took 5-28 as Warwickshire beat Lancashire for 78 at Lord’s
Warwickshire took a huge step towards winning the Bob Willis Trophy by beating Lancashire by 78 points on the first day of the Ladies’ Final.
Seamer Craig Miles took 5-28 while Lancashire was joked inside 28 overs, plummeting to 12-6 in the first hour before Luke Wood (46no) led some sort of recovery on both sides of the lunch just to be left on the ground.
Lancashire would have hoped to make their way on their own soon given the cloudy conditions and while the course was perhaps not as good for bowlers as it had been earlier in the day, the Red Rose players were unable to replicate the accuracy and consistency of their Warwickshire counterparts such as Rob Yates (69no) and Dom Sibley (49no) put up an unbroken 120 for the Bears’ first wicket.
The referees took the players away for bad light shortly after 5pm and when the rain that interrupted play throughout the day returned shortly thereafter, Stumps was called with the new county champions leading 42 points.

Bowling first on a late September morning at Lord’s was the obvious choice for Warwickshire captain Will Rhodes, but even he couldn’t have predicted how good a call would be.
Liam Norwell (2-9) rolled the ball with George Balderson’s wicket, caught on the first slip after trying to withdraw his bat a fraction too late, in the third over and when the seamer claimed his second wicket by the end of the ninth over, Lancashire was 12-6.
Among those Norwell strikes, Miles had claimed four wickets: Lancashire opener to Edgbaston, Alex Davies, superbly captured and pitched after grazing his pad, Luke Wells (0) pitched and Dane Vilas (0) a step away from a swinger yorker in the same before Steven Croft (0) was pinned ahead of eighth.
Wood came in to join Josh Bohannon and the pair were able to provide some respite to the County Championship runners-up with a 35-point stand before the latter threw a short ball from Warwickshire rookie Manraj Johal a midwicket just before the first rain delay of the day.
Johal struck again when play resumed, Tom Bailey lbw for a duck to leave Lancashire 57-8 for lunch.
The restart was delayed by another downpour, but Johal had his third wicket in the first back, Jack Blatherwick went on the second slip.
Matt Parkinson came in at number 11 and got the first ball with a glorious cover shot but, after a Wood had added a few more quick runs, the leg-spinner was the last man to come out, snapping up to give. to Miles his fifth.

With conditions still in the bowlers’ favor, Yates and Sibley came out with a positive approach, not wanting to just sit and wait for a ball bearing their name, and were helped by a few Lancashire bowling matches.
The races came quickly and were one run less than a half-century opening stand when another shower hit the cricket house and led to an early tea.
The pattern continued to revive and it wasn’t until Wood’s introduction, with Warwickshire a matter of running from par, that Lancashire created the first real innings opportunity.
In fact, the left arm striker could have hit twice in his first three balls. The first to Yates got up abruptly, took the outer edge and flew to the second, only to blow it up in Jones’s hands.

Two balls later he angled one on Sibley, who was tempted to get into the drive, took the lead and this time it was wicketkeeper Davies who slipped his hold as he went with one hand to his right leaving Wood in disbelief.
Lancashire’s frustration only escalated when Bailey had a great lbw scream against Yates who turned down the over before the opening reached his 73-ball half-century.
Yates looked largely solid and had 13 boundaries to his name when darkness forced players to leave the pitch and he will have his sights set on a fifth of the season on day two, while Sibley will pick up one less of his fifty as Warwickshire seek. to further strengthen their more dominant position in the match.
