Ironmaster does try to deliver an earnest message of pacifism and personal liberty amongst perfectly lacquered iron-age hair and George Eastman managing to look cool in a frankly ridiculous lion head balaclava.
While it could have all gone wrong, and drastically so, Umberto Lenzi manages to pull this off. It may be just another slice of Clone-an fare but it is fun and with such material this is what matters. Then again not as much fun as Deodato's lumpy and clunky Barbarian Brothers though it is all less episodic and therefore a more cohesive feature than Lucio Fulci's Conquest.
Ironmaster, at times, does get a little gory so parental discretion is recommended here. There is also some animal cruelty that threatens to, at times, take the film down the route of the jungle cannibal genre albeit with periodic debates about freedom and the corrupting influence of technology upon peace-loving communities.
Not unlike the English boy-band of the same name art it ain't, but it is Big Fun.
